The next GeForce Nvidia RTX 4060 from Nvidia intends to compete with the best graphics cards for gaming. Nevertheless, if the rumored specifications are genuine, the GeForce RTX 4060 may dissatisfy a large number of players. If a leaker is to be trusted, it will likely be based on AD107.

GeForce RTX x060 graphics cards from Nvidia have always been a popular among budget-conscious gamers. The most recent Steam Hardware Survey confirms this. The previous three generations of GeForce RTX x060 models are among the ten most popular graphics cards on Steam.
GeForce GTX 1060 and GeForce RTX 2060 are the second and fourth most popular graphics cards, respectively, while GeForce RTX 3060 occupies sixth place. Although the Ada Lovelace architecture is a big improvement over Ampere, the theoretical specifications of the GeForce RTX 4060 are disappointing.

According to hardware leaker kopite7kimi, who has a history of providing accurate information, the GeForce RTX 4060 purportedly utilizes the AD107 chip. It is a die that we are already familiar with because Nvidia uses it for its mobile GeForce RTX 4060 and GeForce RTX 4050 products. Yes, the GeForce RTX 4060 appears to use a die designed for mobile graphics cards, barring any alterations.
GeForce RTX 4060 appears to utilize the PG190 PCB with the AD107-400-A1 at its core. Thus, the Ada-based graphics card will be equipped with 3,072 CUDA cores, 96 Tensor cores, and 24 RT cores. GeForce RTX 3060 featured 3,584 CUDA cores, which is 17% more than the GeForce RTX 4060. Obviously, both utilize different structures.
GeForce RTX 4060 could feature 8GB of 18 Gbps GDDR6 RAM. Since the standard GeForce RTX 3060 employs 15 Gbps modules, the memory modules are allegedly faster. The GeForce RTX 3060 appears to have 50% more memory than the GeForce RTX 4060. It is a big trade-off that will ultimately hinder the performance of newer games, such as Hogwarts Legacy, that can consume VRAM.

The leaker did not reveal the GeForce RTX 4060’s memory interface, although there are few alternatives. It is improbable that the GeForce RTX 4060 will keep the 192-bit memory bus that has been standard since the GTX 1060. This suggests that the GeForce RTX 4060 may only provide up to 288 GB/s of bandwidth, which is 20% less than the GeForce RTX 3060.

The Ada Lovelace architecture will result in an L2 cache boost for the GeForce RTX 4060. The hardware leaker estimated the GeForce RTX 4060 to have a 24MB L2 cache, which is 700% higher than the GeForce RTX 3060’s cache. GeForce RTX 4060 has half the L2 cache of GeForce RTX 4070 Ti as compared to previous Ada-based SKUs. Considering that other Ada GPUs have up to 8MB of L2 cache per 32-bit interface, it appears that the RTX 4060 is similarly lacking in this regard.

GeForce RTX 4060’s decision to utilize mobile silicon may have been motivated by a desire to reduce its power consumption. According to Kopite7kimi, the GeForce RTX 4060 will feature a TDP of 115W. It would place the GeForce RTX 4060 on par with the GeForce GTX 1660 (120W) in terms of thermal design power (TDP). Even the GeForce RTX 4090 Mobile (120W) is more energy-intensive. The GeForce RTX 4060 has a 32% lower TDP than the GeForce RTX 3060, which is 170W.
Overall, assuming the leaks are accurate, the RTX 4060 appears to be a strange answer. The absence of VRAM will undoubtedly be restrictive, and while the L2 cache could compensate for the reduction in bandwidth, it still feels inferior to other models. However, we stated the same about the RTX 4070 Ti’s 192-bit interface. Time will tell how competitive the RTX 4060 is and how much it will cost.
