When there is a problem with the RAM or CPU, the DRAM light on motherboard goes on. Some ways to fix this problem are to put the RAM sticks back in, clean the slots, and update the BIOS on the computer.

What Is DRAM Light?

DRAM light is put on the base of a computer near the RAM slots. The light comes on if there is a problem with the installed Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) or the CPU that keeps happening, like if the RAM slots were not put correctly or broken.

The DRAM light lets you know immediately if there are problems with the computer’s RAM, so you can fix them immediately and stop more damage. It only goes off when all the problems have been fixed.

A few things could cause the DRAM light on the computer to turn on. Depending on the problem and the type of chip, it can stay still or keep blinking. Any of the following could cause the trouble:

  • BIOS settings that are wrong.
  • Incompatible RAM card.
  • RAM needed to be put in right.
  • Bad parts of the motherboard, like RAM slots or capacitors.
  • There needs to be more power.
  • You are using an old version of BIOS.

Ensure Correct Placement Of RAM Modules

The first step in this troubleshooting method is ensuring the RAM module is in the right slot. To be sure, take the module out, blow softly over it and the slot to get rid of any dust or dirt, and then put it back in its place.

Examine The Power Supply

Sometimes the problem happens because the computer and its parts need more power. Look for signs of wear and tear on the power source board.

Inspect The RAM Slot

For the RAM module to work well, it needs a working RAM slot. Make sure that your motherboard’s slot for the RAM is fixed. If a slot is broken, the only way to fix the DRAM light mistake is to replace it with a newer one.

Examine MOBO Cables

One Reddit user fixed the problem with the motherboard’s DRAM light by ensuring that the Motherboard (MOBO) wires were connected correctly.

Since the power source for the motherboard depends on MOBO cables like the 24-pin ATX Power Cable, the 4/8-pin CPU Power Cables, and the SATA Cables, you need to ensure they are securely plugged in.

Clean The Motherboard

Clean the motherboard often to keep dust and other dirt from building up on its parts. But be careful during the process so you don’t break any parts. Read the instructions for your motherboard and clean it the way it says to.

On the other hand, you can clean the motherboard carefully with a cotton swab and compressed air or rubbing alcohol. Please give it a lot of time to dry before you put the case together.

Use One RAM Slot At A Time

If you have more than one RAM stick, take them out and only use one RAM spot at a time. You can also put the RAM stick in different RAM spots until the DRAM light goes out. Testing each RAM spot on its own can help you figure out which one is broken.

Run A Memory Test

Update Your BIOS

I suggest that you update your motherboard’s BIOS to the latest version so that you can use all of its features and functions. Also, the updates fix the problems with the older versions, which keeps the DRAM light from going on.

Update BIOS


  • Go to Lenovo’s official website and look for the goods you want.
  • Choose the “Drivers and Software” tab on the left after you’ve made your choice.
  • Find the box that says “Automatic Update” and click on “Scan Now.”

  • Accept the terms and conditions by clicking “Agree” and then “Continue.”
  • “Download” the Lenovo Service Bridge.
  • Pick a good disk to put the program on.
  • Repeat “Step 3.”
  • “Install” the file with the system update. Let the process run its course.
  • Next, click on “Select Drivers.” Click the box that says “Update Drivers” on the right.
  • Select “Install Now.”
  • Once the app is enabled, open it. Press “Next.”
  • Wait until the search is done.
  • Choose the “BIOS Update” that your computer can use and click “Next.”

  • “Accept” the terms of service and click “Next.”
  • Press the “Install” button to finish.
  • Click “Finish” when the job is done.
  • You’ll see the word “1 Package Was Successfully Downloaded and Installed.”

  • It will start up again. Make sure not to press any buttons or turn off the machine until the updates are done.


  • Start the “MyASUS” program on your computer.
  • To get to the “Customer Support” page, click the “Headset” icon on the left side of the screen.
  • On the list of choices at the top, choose “Live Updates.” Then, click “Latest,” which is right below it.
  • You’ll see a file called “BIOS Update For Windows.” You can get it.
  • Choose “Confirm.”
  • Pick the disk where the file will be saved. Click “OK.”
  • Now, open up the BIOS Utility File.”
  • Hit “OK.”
  • Choose “Next.”
  • Check the “Install” box and click “Next.”
  • You should be ready to run your updates. Click the “Install” button.
  • Go ahead and say, “OK.”
  • Choose “Yes, Restart the Computer Now” and click “Finish.”
  • Now, the PC will restart and go into BIOS mode.
  • Choose “Yes.”
  • The change to the BIOS will start.

Clear CMOS

They can fix the problem by turning off their computer and clearing the CMOS. The process helps the computer because it resets the BIOS and fixes problems with hardware connections and booting. I’ve written down the main steps to this process below.

  • Turn off your computer. Once it is entirely off, take it off the power source.
  • Now, open the computer’s case to get to the RAM cell.
  • Take the RAM module from the hole on the motherboard where it fits.
  • Find the “CMOS” or “Clear CMOS” button and press and hold it for 5 seconds.
  • Next, put the RAM module firmly into its hole, put the computer case back together, and turn on your PC.
  • Check to see if the DRAM light works.

Replace CMOS Battery

Again, open the computer’s case and look on the processor for the CMOS battery. To fix the DRAM light, take the battery out of its place and put in a new one. Make sure that your computer stays unplugged the whole time.

Different Colors Of DRAM Light and Their Meaning

The DRAM light can come on in different colors, and each color shows a different problem with the RAM. I will talk more about this below.

  • Green: There are no problems with the RAM, so there is nothing to worry about.
  • Yellow: It shows that the RAM is being set up and will turn off when the process is done.
  • Red: A red light on the computer means that the RAM is broken and needs to be fixed right away. Check for problems with how the RAM is placed or for bad modules or places.

  • White: It means that the RAM is being used right now.
