Ryzen 7 5800X3D was better than Ryzen 9 5900X at 1440p, with an average FPS of 13% higher. Also, the average FPS of the Ryzen 9 5900X was lower than the 1% lows of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Ryzen 7 5800X3D had 16% more FPS than Ryzen 9 5900X for every 1% drop in FPS.

Overall Gaming Performance Summary

Most of AMD’s performance claims are accurate. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is 10-20% faster at 1080p gaming than the Ryzen 9 5900X. In best-case scenarios with games that benefit most from L3 Cache, this performance gap maybe 25-30%.

Considering the performance disparity above, increasing the resolution to QHD (2560 x 1440) and UHD (3840 x 2160) will reduce the FPS gulf to less than 10%, on average, due to the CPU bottleneck shifting to the GPU.

However, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D outperforms the Ryzen 9 5900X despite having 300 MHz lower Base and Turbo speeds and 50% lower Core/Thread counts.

Productivity Benchmarks

Overclocking the Ryzen 5900X with AMD’s PBO2 (Precision Boost Overdrive 2), a software utility that automatically adjusts CPU frequencies and voltages for optimal performance, can boost its speed to 5.1 GHz, with most speed peaks capped near 5.0 GHz.

Whether you manually overclock the Ryzen 9 5900X or use AMD’s PBO2, gaming and productive workload performance will improve by less than 5%.

Power Consumption and Thermal Efficiency

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Ryzen 9 5900X have 105W TDP (Thermal Design Process) Ratings, while the latter can reach 160W if overclocked. As mentioned above, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D has problems with heat dissipation, which is why AMD restricted the multiplier to discourage overclocking and protect CPU performance and lifespan.
